Today, I thought I would write about one of my favorite bookish poems, written by Julia Donaldson.

The Poem:

“I opened a book and in I strode
Now nobody can find me.
I’ve left my chair, my house, my road,
My town and my world behind me.

I’m wearing the cloak, I’ve slipped on the ring,
I’ve swallowed the magic potion.
I’ve fought with a dragon, dined with a king
And dived in a bottomless ocean.

I opened a book and made some friends.
I shared their tears and laughter
And followed their road with its bumps and bends
To the happily ever after.

I finished my book and out I came.
The cloak can no longer hide me.
My chair and my house are just the same,
But I have a book inside me.”

My Thoughts: I love this poem so much because I can so easily relate to it. I truly believe that reading can do wonderful things. When I read, I am in a trance and no one can take me out of it. I can transport into a fictional world that doesn’t exist and fight along side heroes, or go deep into the mind of someone who could be dead for decades. Whenever I finish a book, I feel different. I have a new world to escape to, a new world that is mine. I can do the impossible there! Books are things that can change lives!
