The City Of Bones (The Shadowhunters, Book 1)

The Plot: One night at a local club in New York City, sixteen year old Clary Fray witnesses a murder and her life changes. That’s when she meets Jace Wayland and that’s where she starts to question her whole existence.

A few days later, her mother gets kidnapped by an evil man named Valentine. (Every evil person is named Valentine these days😂)That’s when she learns about the world of shadowhunters, people who are born and raised to kill demons, and keep peace on Earth. She also learns that all stories are true; vampires, werewolves, faeries, warlocks, but not mummies, of course.

Before she knows it, Clary is swept into a world all things Shadow hunter, but all she cares about is getting her mother back.

My Thoughts: I finally bought and read this book, after months of uncertainty. I was uncertain for mainly two reasons. One because sometimes YA fantasy is a little too mystical and out of the box for me too wrap my head around it and two, because of the mixed reviews it got. The reviews were on opposite ends of the pole, some being like: OH MY GOSH THIS BOOK WAS SOOO GREAT, and other being like: dear god this book was the death of me I hated it with every bone in my body, never read it ever, I give it…. negative infinity stars. (Ok, maybe that was a little extreme, but you get my point.) I was skeptical when I started this book, but I really enjoyed myself!

I loved all the witty jokes in this novel. I feel me and the author have similar sense of humour, because all of the jokes I felt I would say myself. I also like Jace’s sarcasm and fondness of himself!

The plot was intriguing, dramatic, and always kept me on the edge of my seat. Whenever I felt like there was a slow part of the book, Clare dropped a plot twist bomb and I was like: WOAhhh *ground shakes*. There was one that was especially heavy in the WOAhhh factor, but it was also really sad and I was kind if miserable for a little bit after.

There was a love triangle in the book, which I usually loathe, but this one wasn’t too bad. I think it was well written, and the plot twist at the end made it bearable as well.

The characters were a little one dimensional at the beginning, but by the end and especially in the second book, I think that the author really had started to mould the clay of their characters.

The one thing bad I have to say about this book is that the fight scenes were not well executed. I don’t like fight scenes in general, but these ones were particularly boring. We can look past this, though, because they were essential to the plot.

The Cover: I don’t hate the cover, I just have always preferred covers without people on them, because then I associate what the character looks like with the person on the cover, and it leaves little room for my imagination as I read along. The color on this one kind of looks like mud, but I will take this cover over the old one any day! Here is a pic of the old cover if you want to see what it looked like. Click Here

My Rating: I hereby rate this book…. 4.5 STARS!! I have been rating a lot of book 4.5 stars lately, but I feel it fits. (Maybe my choice in books has just gotten better 🙂 )
