Alex and Eliza

By: Melissa De La Cruz

Welcome back to my blog! Today’s post is about a book that I really enjoyed! I hope you like it!

The Plot: From the day Alexander Hamilton met Eliza Schuyler at a ball in 1777, both their lives were changed forever. Fast Forward to more than two years later, 1780, one piercing cold in day February, Alex and Eliza reunite. Alex has not stopped thinking about Eliza since that day at the ball, but after Alex tells her something she is perplexed to hear, Eliza is incredably annoyed at him. Though, Alex persists, desperate to win her heart and soon, Eliza devolps feelings for General Washington’s aide-de-camp, but she is forced into a marriage! Is Alex too late?

My thoughts: I am going to start out by saying I have never seen the the musical about Hamilton, or dabbled in anything like that, so by reading this book, I dipped my toe into the Hamilton fandon, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Let me also tell you, I generally dislike historical fiction, and this book caught me by surprise.

Okay, now that’s out of the way, let’s start the “My Thoughts” portion of this rewiew.

I have read so many mixed reviews on this book, so didn’t know what to expect, but I loved it. Period.

I loved the romance! It was sweet and aborable. Did I mention it was adorable, because, yeah, it was. You can see how it is a YA romance though, with the tropes, but I didn’t mind. I liked how Alex treated her as an equal and Eliza always put herself first. I loved thier playfulness and their friendship. It was like they were made to be together.

This book was exciting and kept me on the edge of my seat! It was sweet and it kept me wanting more!

I loved all the woman-power in this book. Eliza was such a strong-minded character. She doesn’t let people tell her what to do, and she leads her life on her own terms. I admire her for her strength and her courage to defy the societal norms. Eliza is the best because she’s complex and flawed; she’s someone who you can recongize in yourself. Eliza was my favorite out of the three Schuyler sisters, because Angelica got on my nerves and Peggy didn’t speak out enough.

Some of my other favorite characters and aspects of the book: -Peggy’s fiancé, Stephen. I’d read a whole book on him, he’s just too precious. -Eliza’s aunt, Gertrude. Another strong female character -The writing style. I loved it. She switched the piont of view from Alex to Eliza and it kept the book very interesting. -The other officers. I liked this one named Laurens but he was barely in the book!

Some parts were cringey, cliché, and cheesy, but we can look past that.

The Cover: I love the cover as well! The design on the background is beautiful with floral, multitone pinks with the black contrast.

My Rating: I am going to give this book a… 4.5 STAR RATING!! It was really enjoyable and I am excited to read the next book Love and War. It is sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be read!!
